Without professionally developed thermal protection of the building socle, the effectiveness of thermal insulation in the upward walls, floors on the soil, and basement sidewalls decreases significantly.
The application of the moisture and frost resistant, high strength STYROFOAM™ XPS closed-cell polystyrene foam thermal insulation provides a lasting and efficient solution, even as a supplement to ventilated façade systems prepared using other thermal insulation materials.
The STYROFOAM™ XPS socle thermal insulation must be led up to a height of at least 30 cm above the level of the surrounding terrain because of capillary action and splashing moisture.
COMBINED LOAD ON BUILDING SOCLES
The thermal insulation of the building socle is subjected to intense stresses: soil moisture, precipitation, splashing water, mechanical impacts, humic acids etc. Therefore, long-lasting reliable operation can only be ensured by choosing a thermal insulation material that meets the requirements. The application of the STYROFOAM™ extruded polystyrene thermal insulation foam provides a lasting and efficient solution as a result of the beneficial material characteristics:
• closed-cell structure – negligible moisture uptake, frost resistance
• high strength, flexible rigidity – resistance to mechanical impacts
• rough surface – high strength adherence to concrete, mortars and solvent-free adhesives
The construction of cellar perimeter walls and socles of buildings without thermal bridges, in most cases, requires the use of moisture- and frost-resistant, high-strength, plasterable/plaster-bearing thermal insulation materials.
For the insulation of building socles, the patterned, plaster-bearing XPS product resulting in high-strength adherence is recommended.
The thermal insulation boards resisting also to mechanical effects are not sensitive to moisture, and soil moisture, splashing water etc. will not cause any damage to them.
INSTALLATION OF STYROFOAM™ XPS ON BUILDING SOCLES
Where the STYROFOAM™ XPS thermal insulation is to be connected to brick walls or to other thermal insulation materials, or where it is connected to the thermal insulation material of the basement perimeter wall, efforts have to be made to achieve close, accurate matching.
Socle thermal insulation can be used as permanent insulated formwork or installed subsequently.
When a plastic bituminous adhesive is used, supporting or additional mechanical fastening of the thermal insulation boards is also necessary.
The appropriate surface resistance of thermally insulated building socles can be ensured by a strengthened plaster layer, glued cladding or double walling or reinforced concrete, artificial stone or carved stone tiling.
BRICK, STONE AND TILE CLADDING
In the case of glued stone or ceramic tiling, a fibreglass mesh reinforcement is to be applied to the thermal insulation glued on the entire surface, embedded into the adhesive. Up to 25 kg/m2 cladding weight a single layer, from 25 to 40 kg/m2 cladding weight double layer of fibreglass mesh is to be used. Stone and artificial stone claddings are to be installed according the related technological rules for tiling work. Erecting double walls is to be made according to the rules for walling structures (taking care of the foundation of the double wall!)
The embedded single-layer fiberglass reinforcement is fixed by disc dowels and dowel nails, calculated with max. 8 kg cladding load on one dowel. In the case of double-layer fiberglass mesh, dowels are driven between the two mesh layers, calculated with the same weight distributions. Cladding tiles can be glued onto the crust so formed, using the appropriate adhesive and jointing.
