The Tüskecsarnok is a modern, versatile, and spectacular center. The facility, located next to the InfoPark and the ELTE campus in Lágymányos, can host close to twenty sports disciplines. As a result, visitors can compete, train, and view events at one of the most modern sports complexes of our country. The wide scale of functions called for insulation which resists environmental impact and is capable of bearing various types of loads.
The hall, capable of hosting 4000 visitors, is a location for domestic and international sports events. The central arena was equipped with a replaceable floor cover, thereby making it capable of organizing competitions in virtually all indoor sports disciplines. For example, the Tüskecsarnok is also host to ice based sporting events. The four gyms and two training halls can be used by professional athletes for training and preparation. In addition, the facility also houses a diagnostic laboratory and 35 locker rooms. A two-level underground garage for 435 vehicles was constructed below the hall.
The facility is named after a total of 84 “spikes” at the top, each of which is six meters tall, pyramid shaped, made of glass, letting natural light into the arena. These provide lavish nighttime lighting. The hall is the fifth largest indoor sports complex in Hungary after the Papp László Budapest Sport Arena, the Főnix hall in Debrecen, and the arenas in Győr and Veszprém.
In addition to construction design, a great deal of attention went into establishing energy efficient operating conditions in this building as well. Accordingly, the flat roof parts of the building have been modernized for the purpose of energy efficiency using RAVATHERM XPS heat insulation. The inverted roof constructed at the end of the nineties and the 10 cm thick Roofmate SL heat insulation is now protected by an additional 8 cm of RAVATHERM XPS, offering a total of R = 5.60 m2K/W heat conductibility resistance. It was possible to retain the old heat insulation on this building due to its excellent condition and the special two-layered heat insulation installation solution.
