Traditionally, underground pipelines sensitive to frost have been laid in a depth below the frost-line. Since the use of the traditional methods has become quite complicated owing to various reasons (e.g. excessive proportion of built-up areas, dense underground public utility networks), laying pipes in small depths combined with thermal insulation plates fixed above the pipes has become an extensively accepted method.
As to ensure unencumbered operation of the pipelines, RAVATHERM™ XPS thermal insulation can be used for providing protection from frost. The water flowing in the pipes must not freeze and the pipes must be protected from breakage or damage owing to frost
Long term water supply and waste pipes solution Pipework systems must be protected against frost to main- tain trouble-free performance. The water in pipes must not freeze and the pipelines must not be damaged or fractured by frost action. Heavy demands are placed on insulation material for water supply and sewage installations: it must maintain its insula- ting capability for the service life of the pipe – between 50 and 100 years – and must withstand loads from works traffic.
